Hemp Fibre

Canada has developed expertise in hemp fibre production and capacity is expanding to meet increasing demands.

Hemp grows quickly and produces strong, durable, sustainable natural plant fibres which can produce an endless number of products to satisfy our needs.

Hemp has applications as high-quality pressboard materials, hempcrete, insulation, and composite products.  It is also a substitute for plastic in many products.

Products produced from hemp can enhance durability, reduce weight, and improve a sector’s carbon footprint.

To advance the hemp fibre industry, CHTA is facilitating various projects which:

  1. Explore the sustainability of the hemp industry in Canada
  2. Test agronomic traits of fibre specific hemp cultivars at research locations across Canada
  3. Perform post harvest management research which will increase the quality of stored hemp fibre
  4. Assist in setting standards which will facilitate trade
  5. Expand the international market for Canadian hemp through CHTA’s tradeshow program
